Home Security Locks And Hinges For Improved Safety As Part Of Your Home Protection System

Nothing is worse than returning home to find out a burglary has taken place. Taking preventive measures should be a top priority for all homeowners. The first place to start is the point of entry, the door. This is the first place a burglar is going to try to gain entry into a house. A door is only as strong as its weakest point. Finding and fixing weak spots in door security is a great way to reduce chances of home robbery. Even with the strongest security doors, if there is no home security locks installed, all it takes is a kick to gain entry.
The easiest way to gain entry to a house through a locked door is to remove the door. Hinges on the outside of the property are the biggest concern. Security hinges like setscrew hinges prevent hinges from being removed if the door is closed. A screw is inserted through the hinge and hinge bolt, on the inside of the hinge, which can only be reached from the inside of an opened door. Crimped pins are another security hinge that prevents the pin from being removed at all. The problem with crimped pins is it makes it hard for homeowners to remove the door if the need arose. If possible, avoid outdoor hinges all together, because it makes a house an easy target, even with the use of expensive home security locks.
When it comes to door locks, just having a simple locking doorknob is not enough. The reason kicking a door is effective is because it separates the lock from the strike plate. A way to prevent this is by reinforcing a strike plate with longer screws, or better yet using a special security strike plate. The simplest home security locks that work are deadbolts. Deadbolts are a sturdy lock that goes further into the doorjamb, making it hard to get through the door once locked. For owners with glass windows on or near the door have an increased security risk. It makes it easy for burglars to break a window and open a deadbolt from the inside. Using a special double-cylinder deadbolt eliminates this risk by requiring a key on both the outside and the inside.
There are elements that should be prevented to avoid attracting the attention of a burglar. Replacing any of the following is a good start: poor fitting doors, hinges on the outside, and windows on or near doors. A security with better lighting around all doors, and by adding home security locks such as deadbolts to all doors.
